OUR STORY

As a welcoming congregation, inspired by and committed to the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, we reach out to all people by celebrating the gift of God’s unconditional love, forgiveness, and grace.

In the fall of 1888, three individuals “agreed it was time for an English speaking church” in the predominantly German speaking town of Elmhurst. A group of about 30 residents began to meet and in 1890, First Congregational Church was founded. Education and Christian fellowship was their passion. It is still our passion today. In 1961, the church officially joined the United Church of Christ.

We are a welcoming congregation, inspired by and committed to the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. We reach out to all people by celebrating the gift of God’s unconditional love, forgiveness and grace. We live our faith through caring fellowship and Christian love. Joyously, we educate, guide and nurture children, youth, adults and families so they grow in their own faith as global citizens. We endeavor to serve the needs of each other, the community and beyond.

Working locally for the global good.

Passion for the Bible and worship; serving others in a caring respectful ways; sustaining God’s creation for future generations by promoting “green” practices that benefit the environment; actively engaging children and youth in all areas of church life; a love for great music; spiritual growth for all ages.

To be faithful partners in Christ’s service.

WORSHIP

Our worship is both traditional and contemporary. We are rooted in the traditions of our faith but seek fresh and creative expressions for today.

MISSIONS

First Congregational has a rich legacy of mission work. We respond to God’s call to know and love our brothers and sisters in our community and around the world.

GROUPS

Every group at First Congregational is different and unique. Some share a meal or study a book, but the main goal is to share a life together, serve and draw closer through care, connection, and events.

We are individuals with hopes, dreams, questions, and fears.  We are stressed-out parents trying to lead lives that express our values.  We are children needing positive connections to form our life’s foundation. We are friends holding steady through each other’s peaks and valleys.  We are a community of imperfect people following the teachings of Christ.

We are called to act as Global Citizens, aware of the ways we are connected to all of God’s Creation.  We intentionally seek to nurture the light of God within and share it in a complex world that needs healing. We believe God’s love is inclusive and unconditional.

We believe in Christ and Christ’s work of redemption and reconciliation in every generation. This is why we are committed to listening for God’s “still speaking” voice for our lives and in the world today. No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. We believe in extravagant welcome and our communion table is open to all who seek to know God’s grace and Christ’s presence. We advocate justice for all including the environment and believe the church’s mission changes lives.
